For a great-value, countryside retreat heading down towards Burgundy, Vaugouard presents an attractive proposition even without the very warm welcome and friendly staff.

There are 42 bedrooms – 11 in the main 18th-century chateau and 31 in the annexes. The dining room is elegant and al-fresco lunches and dinners on the terrace overlooking the golf course is always a must. There’s also a clubhouse lunchtime brasserie for simpler fare.

Close to the very pretty town of Montargis – known as the “Venice of France”, and 75 minutes’ drive from both Troyes in Champagne and Beaune in Burgundy, Vaugouard is perfectly located for wine and history buffs. The on-site golf course is enjoyable and quite demanding in places and you can also play Augerville and Fontainebleau, the latter of which is often rated No.1 in France.
