In the south of Austria, just across the border of Slovenia and an hour from Graz Airport, the Austrian Alps provide a breathtakingly beautiful and refreshing holiday destination with a fair share of fine golf courses.
The area around Klagenfurt and Lake Worthersee is where it all happens with four golf courses providing stunning scenery but quite different golf challenges. Klagenfurt is the capital city of the province of Carinthia and features an eclectic architecture of Baroque and Renaissance. 1500 feet above sea level, Klagenfurt is nevertheless dominated by the surrounding hills and mountains which climb up to 3300 ft. A former “European City of the Year”, Klagenfurt has seen more than its fair share of invasions due to its geographical location between the richer countries of Europe and the Adriatic Sea.
The city has been awarded a record three times the Europa Nostra Diploma for its exemplary restoration of its medieval centre. With a population of over 100,000, Klagenfurt provides plenty of life to go along with the history and picture-postcard scenery. All of the four recommended golf courses are within a 30-minute drive and the area makes a perfect two-centre holiday with the more traditional attractions of Vienna and also the lakeside golf resort of Bled in neighbouring Slovenia.
For access, it’s best to take the 2 1/4 hour flight to Ljublana in Slovenia and then it’s a wonderful 75 minute drive to the Klugenfurt.
