Golf Holidays in Sri Lanka

The Indian Ocean island of Sri Lanka boasts elephants, leopards and sloth bears. And 103 rivers! Lying 60 miles off the south coast of India, Sri Lanka was known as Ceylon when it was part of the British Empire. Hugely important for the Maritime Silk Road, the island was fought over by several European nations.

Although relatively small, Sri Lanka has the largest bio-diversity in Asia and has 24 wildlife reserves and 3210 known flowering plants. Safeguarding its endemic flora, fauna and animals since the 1970’s, Sri Lanka was ahead of its time in looking after its ecology and environment. GDP, health and education are impressive and the US, China and Russian have all helped the country develop – perhaps recognising the unique and important part Sri Lanka has to play in the enviromentally-sensitive future.

For your holiday, I’m recommending the luxury Shangri-La resort on the south coast and just a hop flight from the capital of Colombo and its international airport. Complete with it’s own cultural village, the Shangri-La is the rather special way of enjoying the nature and the history of the island while allowing plenty of time to relax in sumptuous surroundings.

Flight time to Colombo: 9 hours outward and 13 hours homeward to Colombo. The resort is a 240km private transfer from Colombo, or a private air taxi to the resort can be arranged

Time difference + 4 ½ hours

Climate: Tropical throughout the year. December through to March are the driest months
