I am delighted to provide my recommended itinerary for a golfing holiday in Comporta next May.
Comporta is in the Alentejo region about 75 minutes south of Lisbon and is rural wine-growing area with a strong beach/coast vibe. The area is well known among the well-heeled residents of Lisbon and is a hot-spot for artists as well as hosting a few bars and a surprisingly wide choice of restaurants. Its trendiness means that dining is pricey but I enjoyed the food and the service and wine lists were excellent. There are also a couple of beachfront wine bars and brasseries a sandy 15-minute walk from town.
For golf, Dunas Golf Club (pictured above) is a visual and playing treasure and has already made it to No.3 in mainland Europe’s Top 100. Torre will open later this month and looked stunning when I visited it in March. Troia is a well-established links/parkland, always rated in Europe’s Top 30 but the fairways and tees need TLC – the course is now owned by the same company that has bought Monte Rei and San Lorenzo so I am sure Troia will be back to its best soon. A “hidden gem” is Pinheirinho which is very private but my conversations with them are going well; the course is opening in September and is virtually opposite Torre Golf Club. The area is becoming exceptionally strong for golf with quality architects making the most of the beautiful terrain, backed up by friendly staff and impressive green-keeping.
Until Troia is back to its best, I am suggesting we play twice at Dunas and once each at Torre and Pinheirinho. Buggies are included in all the green fees, the courses are not hilly but there are long walks between some greens and the next tee.
For accommodation, AlmaLusa Comporta has the monopoly if you want to stay in town. The Quinta da Comporta is preparing a special rate for me for 2026 but that will still be more expensive and it’s in a quieter location although closer to the three courses. The AlmaLusa is fun, the staff are super friendly and there is plenty of parking. The bedrooms are quite small but the breakfast is excellent and there’s an evening bar, light restaurant, rooftop bar and outdoor heated pool. The centre of Comporta is a one minute walk from the hotel. All told, it’s a pleasant four-star.
