Hotel Overview

An intimate and independent hotel just a short drive from all the great golf courses, Bernardus Lodge remains my favourite small hotel in the glorious area of Carmel just a few miles inland from Pebble Beach.

The discreet and long entrance takes you to a world of luxury. With 73 bedrooms – all quite contemporary in style and very luxurious including limestone gas fireplace – and lots of subtle but welcoming add-ons such as the complimentary wine bar, Nespresso machine, fine tea selection and impeccable service. Cuisine is brilliant and the best I’ve eaten in the USA (excluding Sea Island in Georgia). Chef follows the “farm to table” ethos with as much produce as possible coming from the hotel’s 28-acre estate.

There’s a spa, beautiful gardens, bowling green. It’s all very European but located in one of the most beautiful parts of America. Stay here to play the unknown (outside of the USA anyway) and keenly-priced Harding Park, Bayonet and Pasatiempo and add a day or two of “tick list” courses such as Spyglass. Bernardus Lodge is ideal for a week’s stay or four or five nights as part of a California Tour taking in the wine and golf of Napa Valley, the sights and sounds of San Francisco and a couple of nights inland at Cordevalle…Four different experiences all within easy driving distance of each other.
