SOUTH WALES Celtic Manor: 2010, Roman Road & Montgomerie

Course overview

The 2010 was specifically built to host the 2010 Ryder Cup and measures a monster 7493 yards off the back tees with a miserly par of 71.   There are lots of risk and reward holes with water hazards on half the course.  It’s best to take advantage of the generous holes in the early stage of your round and to hold on to your score while negotiating the more liquid layout on the back nine.

Robert Trent Jones Senior designed The Roman Road course which was the original course at Celtic Manor, opening in 1995.  A generous design, the par is a tough par 70.  The views are terrific and I recommend The Roman Road for your loosener.

Designed by Colin Montgomerie, the Montgomerie is a very pretty par 69 with spectacular views and a relatively tight and tricky design featuring pot bunkers and quite small greens.

All told, Celtic Manor boasts three fine courses designed to challenge the best of us.  Rated 9th, 23rd and 25th best courses in Wales, it – like the hotel – is a one-stop-shop for a memorable golf holiday.
