There are various guides and rankings for golf resorts—some are sponsor-led, some are dated and some are biased towards certain countries. I’m lucky enough to have stayed and played at many golf resorts around the world. Here’s my personal mainland European Top 10, in no particular order because once a resort reaches such standards, the actual ranking becomes irrelevant. I’ve considered the quality of the golf course(s), accommodation, service, facilities, accessibility for British golfers and apres golf.
Ritz Carlton Penha Longa Resort, Sintra nr Lisbon
27 golf holes, a setting within a national park, nine dining options and fantastic facilities make Penha Longa a great choice for active foodies. There’s an impressive spa, Ritz Kids’ club, and the Atlantic beaches, the worldclass links of Oitavos Golf Club and the coastal resorts of Cascais and Estoril are all just 20 minutes away. Popular with well-heeled Portuguese, Penha Longa falls below the radar for British golfers but it shouldn’t. The Trent Jones Snr golf course has hosted the Portuguese Open and poses many beautiful challenges through the undulating woodland. Just 30 minutes from Lisbon Airport and with several flights a day to/from the UK, think of Penha Longa as an easy-to-get-to long weekend treat. And even if you play like a Joker, you’ll certainly eat like a King…In fact, I don’t know of any other hotel in the world that can boast three Michelin-starred restaurants!

Evian Resort Near Geneva
With the five-star Royal, four-star Ermitage and Manoir Dormy House, Evian is the most generous resort I’ve visited…A golf course that hosts the Evian Masters (the Ladies 5th Major), a sensational practice complex, its own theatre, world-class spa, thalassotherapy centre, the Kids’ Resort with four different clubs to take care of baby to teenager, six restaurants…And all overlooking the stunning Lake Leman.
My favourite hotel is the Ermitage but the Royal is a must for a special occasion, and the Manoir is perfect for golfers who want to immerse themselves in the sport. The parkland golf course is exceptionally wellmaintained and provides a mix of tough and attackable holes. It’s 75 minutes from Geneva Airport. I can arrange private transfers or ask me to book a hire car if you fancy exploring the French and Swiss Alps which tower behind the resort.

Hotel Quinta Do Lago, Algarve
A Leading Hotel of the World since 1988 and with three courses in Portugal’s Top 15, Hotel Quinta do Lago is a constantly-impressive resort. Everything is spot-on and that’s because the staff are long-serving and expert and the hotel has the true identity of being the best hotel on the Algarve. It doesn’t have 22 restaurants, massive bedrooms or priceless antiques but what it does have, it does very, very well: two restaurants, two bars, spa, direct access to the beach and a choice of local restaurants within easy reach.
The three golf courses are maintained to perfection with the South being considered the best, the North the toughest and Laranjal the most technical. It’s golf in Southern Europe of the highest order.

Finca Cortesin, Costa Del Sol
Finca Cortesin is a boutique resort of the “money no object” category and will no doubt reap the benefit of having the world’s sporting attention this early autumn when it hosts the Solheim Cup. Located a little inland and between Sotogrande and Estepona, the resort offers 67 beautiful suites, ornate gardens, a Thai spa, beach club, four restaurants and a very special ambience. The American-type golf course is tough, fair and great fun and is good enough to play all week. Costa Navarino, Greece
Golf in Greece has gone from zero to hero in the space of 10 years with the opening of Costa Navarino in Messinia, south-west Greece. It’s easy to see why its been rated No.1 European Golf Resort by Golf World. Now with four hotels (Westin, Romanos, Mandarin Oriental and W) and four golf courses, it’s five-star all the way but the value is equally impressive. Dining is hearty and tasty at all 14 restaurants and the whole resort is as environmentally-friendly as possible with staff and most of the produce coming from this historic paradise. There’s an award-winning spa and beautiful beach too. For sport, you’ve got it covered with the amazing tennis centre, children’s clubs and nature and leisure activities, including an indoor basketball court and bowling alley, nature walks and water sports galore.

Terre Blanche, Provence
A former multi-award-winning Four Seasons Resort, Terre Blanche has arguably got even better and brings world-class service and facilities to one of the most beautiful parts of the world…Provence.
The 115 bedrooms are set out as a spacious and idyllic village with five restaurants, a Roman-style spa, brilliant Kids’ Club, and 36 holes of gorgeous American-style golf backed up by the Albatros Golf Performance Centre. Gloria Serenity, Belek, Turkey
There are many top-quality resort hotels in Belek but the Serenity has always been my favourite. And even more so now that it has re-opened after a complete refurbishment. It’s a low-build hotel with the bedrooms, suites and villas spread out over the gardens so there’s a tremendous feeling of space and “zen”. In short, the hotel leaves up to its name. The food options and spa are terrific and the service is the most attentive in the region. Plus, you can use the leisure facilities, bars and restaurants at the Serenity’s sister hotels—the Gloria Golf and Gloria Verde.
There are 45 holes of good golf at the Gloria resort plus many in the area including my favourites Carya, Lykia Links and the National. Belek is now recognised as the No.1 for All-Inclusive sunshine golf holidays and the Gloria Serenity is the diamond in that crown.

PGA Catalunya, Costa Brava, Spain
Tucked away about 10 miles inland from the Costa Brava coastline in the north-east of Spain, PGA Catalunya Resort is just 10 minutes from the small medieval city of Girona (and its international airport) and 80 minutes from Barcelona. It’s a mighty set-up with two splendid target-golf courses, a Leading Hotel of the World five– star, contemporary four-star hotel, top-to-toe Wellness Centre and three restaurants. It’s a golfing oasis in an unspoilt and very welcoming part of Spain where nature comes to the fore!.
The Stadium Course is rated among Europe’s Top 10 and the equally pretty but less challenging Tour Course is rated in Spain’s Top 10. Both courses are cut through pine forests and have half-a-dozen holes where a poor shot will end up wet. The Tour Course is slightly shorter and with wider fairways. It might have lost out on its original goal of hosting the Ryder Cup but PGA Catalunya has developed into a venue that should be included on your “golfing things to do” list.

Royal Mougins, French Riviera
I visit the South of France about every three years and, each time, I come back thinking how easy it is to get to, how wonderful it is and I should go back on a more regular basis. Royal Mougins Golf Resort is a boutique gem 20 minutes inland from Cannes, 30 minutes from Nice Airport and just ten minutes from idyllic Mougins and the renowned Cannes Mougins Golf Club. In short, it’s perfectly located!
The bedrooms start at generous and work upwards and each one comes with a useful kitchen corner and a huge terrace overlooking the course. There’s a spa, outdoor pool, beautiful clubhouse and panoramic restaurant. The golf course is by the legendary Robert von Hagge (he also built Les Bordes, Seignosse and many other stunning courses) at his most playful with challenges and teases galore. Discreet but so convenient, Royal Mougins is a wonderful introduction to what makes the South of France so special.

Medoc Golf Resort is like the wines made in the surrounding vineyards—it gets better with age. With just 79 bedrooms there are nevertheless two high-quality golf courses, a Cinq Mondes spa and two restaurants.
20 minutes from Bordeaux Airport and 40 minutes from the fabulous city centre and the amazing Atlantic Coastline, Medoc is easy to get to. As well as the on-site attractions, there are scores of famous wine chateaux that open their doors to tours and tastings and local villages where you can sample more of the renowned local gastronomy. The hotel is contemporary and welcoming with spacious bedrooms. Medoc Les Chateaux is a heathland course rated among Europe’s finest and Medoc Les Vignes is a mix of forest and parkland rated in France’s Top 30.
It all makes for a very fine vintage.
