Hotel Overview

Originally built in 1906 by the railway owners to encourage holidaymakers to use the trains, Turnberry was ahead of its time with fully electric lighting, central heating and plunge baths. The hotel was a hit until WWII and it’s only during the last 20 years (and the investments of various owners) that Turnberry has become a world-class resort again. Turnberry oozes hospitality and space. One of my favourite views in the world is to look out from the hotel terrace over the links and iconic lighthouse to the Ailsa Craig sitting in the Firth of Clyde.

Golf

Of course, the golf is famous and has hosted a wealth of Championships. It’s now looking better than ever after the much-admired remodelling by Martin Ebert which led to the 2016 layout being named as the No.1 golf course in the UK & Ireland. And the second course, King Robert the Buce, is a stunner too. Turnberry oozes hospitality and space.

Accommodations

All the bedrooms are beautiful and the beds are among the best I’ve slept in. I don’t often suggest upgrading but I seriously recommend paying the supplement to have an Ocean View – it sets you up for the day and reminds you that you’re in a very special place. You can choose to stay in the main House, the self-catering apartments and Suites in the Machrie Cottages and Villas and even in the Lighthouse.

Bars & Dining

There are four dining possibilities – the fine-dining 1906 and Chef’s Table, both with views to remember for a long time, the revamped Duel in the Sun on the golf course and an extensive snack menu in the Tea Lounge. Unfortunately one of the previous owners took away the wonderful Whisky Bar and replaced it with an all-too-blingy crystal and mirrors affair but now, the class is back with the Grand Tea Lounge offering a snug with over 250 whiskies and an elegant lounge serving cocktails and light foods.

Recreational & Wellness

For non-golfers, the views, the beachside walking, running routes and the hospitality would please many but, just in case, the Espa is superb, there’s Turnberry Adventures for outdoor activities, and there are plenty of historic castles – such as Culzean Castle – to explore in the beautiful region of Ayrshire.

Conclusion

Being half-Scottish, I have a tendency to love Scotland and it links in golfing. There’s no finer “play & stay” resort to make you love it too. Turnberry is a must and will undoubtedly become a regular on your “things to do this year” list!

Prices to stay at Turnberry are now flexible so demand on when and how long you are going for but rest assured my rates are always better than any public deal. Likewise, Hotel Residents receive a healthy reduction off the green-fees and my green-fee rates for Residents are even lower so it makes financial (as well as pleasurable) sense to stay at Turnberry if you’re planning to play twice or more. And with King Robert The Bruce now rated as No.40 in Scotland (Ailsa is rated No.1), it’s well worth forgetting about the car and playing all your golf on your doorstep.
