Golf Holidays in Western Algarve

The western Algarve, known for its rustic coastline, rolling hills and Mediterranean climate, boasts a couple of Portugal’s most renowned golf courses. Among the standout courses in this region are Palmares Golf, Amendoeira Golf Resort and a handful of other treats that make the area a hub for golf enthusiasts willing to travel that little bit further out in order to find quieter fairways and cheaper green-fees.

The western Algarve is a captivating destination. Centred around towns like Lagos and Portimão, the region offers a diverse array of attractions that appeal to all types of holidaymakers.

Lagos

Lagos is an historic town with a vibrant atmosphere and surrounded by natural beauty. Its cobblestone streets and whitewashed buildings are filled with lively restaurants, shops and cafes. The town’s historical highlights include the Forte da Ponta da Bandeira; a 17th-century fort and the Church of Santo António, known for its intricate gold-leaf interior.
Lagos’ coastline is legendary, featuring iconic landmarks like Ponta da Piedade, where towering rock formations and sea caves create a dramatic backdrop for boat tours or kayaking adventures. Nearby beaches, such as Praia Dona Ana and Praia do Camilo, are famous for their golden sands and crystal-clear waters.

Portimão

Portimão, located further east, is a bustling town celebrated for its marina, cultural attractions and proximity to Praia da Rocha, one of the Algarve’s most famous beaches. The beach is framed by cliffs and offers a lively boardwalk lined with restaurants and bars.
For a taste of local culture, visit the Portimão Museum, housed in a former fish cannery, which tells the story of the region’s fishing heritage. I always love to visit the fish restaurants by the port as it reminds me of when we used to have fresh sardines grilled with lemon and salt cooked by the fishermen as soon as they brought the catch it. Back then, Portimao was also famous for leather shoe manufacturing – I don’t think they make them anymore but at least the sardines are still coming in.

The western Algarve’s natural beauty extends to places like Sagres, known for its rugged cliffs and historic fort, and the Costa Vicentina, a pristine natural park perfect for hiking. Combining great landscapes, history and lively towns, the western Algarve offers a rich and varied experience for visitors, away from the more upmarket central Algarve.
