Golf Holidays in Sardinia & Sicily

I’ve grouped the three beautiful Nediterranean islands of Sicily, Sardinia and Corsica together despite the first two being Italian and Corsica being French.
Corsica lies about 20 miles west of Italy, between the coast of Pisa and Rome. Sardinia is directly south of Corsica with less than ten miles between the ports of Bonifacio and Santa Teresa. Sardinia lies 100 miles south-east of south Sicily and practically touches the south-east corner of mainland Italy.

All three islands are dramatically beautiful with a mix of rugged inland scenery and soft beaches. All three proudly display their history and heritage and all three boast fabulous Mediterranean weather. Plus, each island has a European Top 100 course and at least one more besides and any quality of golfer will be delighted with Is Arenas on Sardinia, Donnafugata and Verdura on Sicily and Sperone on Corsica.
The style and comfort of hotels will put a smile on the most discerning of faces and don’t even bother asking about the food – Mediterranean islands with strong links to France and Italy…Of course the food is outstanding!

With direct flights, these gorgeous islands are very good value out of the summer month and you’ll be away from the crowds. For golf, you’ll be playing designs by the likes of Robert Trent Jones Senior, Frank Pennink, Henry Cotton, Kyle Phillips, Robert von Hagge and the Gary Player Design Studio…So you know you’re in for good holiday golf in stunning surroundings.
My favourite golf course is Is Arenas on the west coast of Sardinia (with its own hotel), Is Molas is cracking value and Pevero is certainly “in with the in crowd” but you pay a heavy price to stay at the hotels near there.

For Corsica, I recommend concentrating on the south of the island where you can play and stay at both Sperone (Trent Jones) and Domaine de Murtoli (Kyle Phillips) or choose to stay in fashionable boutique hotels near Porto Vecchio and Bonifacio. Flight access is increasingly easy and prices are good value outside the summer months.

The small island of Sicily has no fewer than seven courses with the Rocco Forte resort of Verdura leading the way with world-class comforts and two good courses. I also like Donnafugata which is less “wow” than Verdura but just as much fun and also has two fine golf courses. For history and culture and sights to see, Sicily is hard to beat and hardly a week goes by without a festival to enjoy.
