Please find my recommended itinerary for a short-break at the PGA Catalunya resort in north-east Spain.
The region is blessed with several good courses; PGA Catalunya has two fine golf courses: the Stadium Course which is often rated No.1 in Spain and the Tour Course, rated No.25. The Stadium is longer, flatter and wider and more dramatic but I also enjoy the Tour course which demands a little more strategy and is arguably the prettier of the two. Emporda Forest is about 45 minutes away and rated in Spain’s top 30 and was designed by the late and great Robert von Hagge who built spectacular courses with plenty of hazards – Emporda is cut through a pine forest and features plenty of water hazards amid a beautiful backdrop. I also enjoy Golf d’Aro (40 minutes) which is a more classic design but in a picturesque woodland setting on a plateau on the Gavarres Mountains.
I have not visited PGA Catalunya Resort since they tweaked the courses and completely refurbished the Camiral hotel but clients tell me that the hotel is superb and the two courses are even better than they were. The resort is quite lively with a selection of self-catering villas, a four-star dormy-house golf hotel, and the five-star Camiral the worthy focal point. The hotel has 145 bedrooms with standard (called Deluxe) measuring a reasonable 32m2 and there’s an award-winning spa and three restaurants. Camiral Wellness Resort is a member of the prestigious Leading Hotels of the World. I regularly meet with the resort management and they’re friendly and professional and are deservedly proud of their destination. The historic and colourful city of Girona is a 15-minute drive from the hotel.
June 19-21 provides keen prices and nice tee-times and British Airways flies from Heathrow to Barcelona with a very regular service. The drive from Barcelona to the resort takes about 75 minutes and private transfers in a 14-seater minibus are included.
