I am pleased to provide my suggested itinerary for a holiday in western Andalucia next autumn.
The obvious and stand-out hotel is the completely remodelled Parador de Cadiz on the seafront. It’s ultra contemporary and has 146 bedrooms, spa, indoor and outdoor pools and secure car park (payable). The restaurant (there’s a Tapas Bar too) overlooks the sea and the centre of the old city is a ten-minute walk.
Cadiz (pictured above) is an interesting and diverse city and was hugely important for its access to Africa and the New World. A private three-hour walking tour of the city’s best sites with pick-up from the hotel is included in the price.
For golf, Costa Ballena, Sherry Golf and Montecastillo are three pleasant courses within easy reach of the hotel. The area deserves to be far more popular with golfers but flight access is not easy. Montecastillo was designed by Jack Nicklaus and is a hilly course with huge vistas and a welcoming layout that shouldn’t challenge your game too much. Sherry Golf is owned by the local Sherry producers and is a relatively tight and very pretty course with amazing views. Costa Ballena golf course is now part of a golf and leisure hotel and was designed by Jose Maria Olazabal – it sits on the beach and is an enjoyable and quite varied layout. Overall, it’s nice golf without being “wow”.
