Robert von Hagge golf course designs are always spectacular and his courses in France include Les Bordes, Kempferhof, Golf National and Royal Mougins…Need we say more?

When it opened in the late 1980s, Seignosse was rated in the World Top 100, had a poor golf hotel and was “must play” by every knowledgeable golfer – including Jose Maria Olazabal as it reminded him of Augusta. Today, the hotel has gone and the reputation has dimmed a little but we don’t know why. It’s still a brilliant golf course, the condition is super and the recently-rebuilt clubhouse is good. Seignosse is still rated in the French Top 10. I love it.

As 6300 yards off the whites (there are tiger tees measuring about 6700 yards if you’re feeling very ambitious), the course is not long by modern standards but it doesn’t need to be as there are hazards galore for the naïve golfer to be overwhelmed by. Savvy players will plot their way around and realise that the par fives are designed as three-shotters for everyone and the par fours are about placing your tee-shot. And then the fun begins, as the greens have two or three tiers and are usually very quick.

Seignosse is a beautiful and clever golf course, hilly in parts but not to be missed. And with the re-opened hotel on-site, Seignosse is a great choice for a top-quality play&stay holiday away from the crowds.
