This is probably Robert Trent Jones most famous work in Europe and Valderrama has a glorious and rather exclusive history having hosted the Ryder Cup and several nail-biting end-of-season European Tour Volvo Master competitions.
It is a difficult and subtle golf course (and an expensive one to play) but, whatever your score, Valderrama must be on your tick-list to play.
7000 yards off the tips, it plays longer with tucked-away greens and some are quite small too. Fairways are fairly generous but the bunkers are big and, when the Greenkeeper has let the rough grow a bit, you’ve got to keep it on the straight and narrow. A true test of golf with a marvellous clubhouse and a real golfing experience. Valderrama is one of the best reasons why Sotogrande is so celebrated among golfing circles.
Along with San Roque, Sotogrande, La Reserva and Finca Cortesin, Valderrama is part of a “ten mile strip” of glorious golf. Ask about my Golf Pass “Spain’s Finest Golf Courses” as it makes playing these prestigious courses affordable,
