One of very favourite courses in the world, Ailsa was brilliant before the redesign and is now even better. Relatively short at under 6500 yards, the Ailsa course has wind on its side and plenty of superbly-placed hazards.
This is a thinking-golfer’s layout and is arguably the prettiest links on the Open roster. An airbase during WW11, you can still see the runway and the lighthouse is another near unique factor. Mackenzie Ross rebuilt the course and it reopened in 1951 to much acclaim and then Martin Ebert updated the design in 2015. It all adds up to brilliance and is rated No.1 in the UK & Ireland. It’s no coincidence that some of the most exciting Opens were at Turnberry.
