Marriott Bonvoy Penha Longa is a stand-alone luxury golf resort about 15 minutes inland from Cascais.

History and the area

The estate dates back over 700 years and such history adds a healthy dose of charm to the impressive and contemporary hotel. Over recent years, it’s become one of the most complete resorts in Europe and offers very good value if you’re happy to stay and play at the resort’s 27 holes and dip in and out of the area’s beautiful tourist attractions including the medieval town of Sintra, the Atlantic beaches and the capital of Lisbon which is just 30 minutes away.

Dining

With up to six restaurants, two of which have Michelin starts, Penha Longa rivals the far larger Ritz Carlton Abama in Tenerife, for having the best dining choices of any golf resort in Europe and beyond. With dining styles from around the world and half-board starting at about £50 per night, it’s a fantastic selection and great value.

Bedrooms and Facilities

There are nearly 200 bedrooms so there’s always a bit of life, the leisure facilities are as varied and as good as any one could wish for and the spa is a massive 1500m2.

Golf

Penha Longa is a manicured and undulating golf course and regular host to the Portugal Open as well as highly-rated among Europe’s finest. It’s a fine track with beautiful views of the nearby coast. Designed by Trent Jones Jnr, it’s quite generous off the tee, less so for your approaches! The 18-hole Atlantic course is partnered by its nine-hole sister “Monastery” course which is narrower and with super greens – it’s great for a post-lunch round before you hit the clubhouse or the brilliant capital city of Lisbon

Just down the road, you have Oitavos Links which is another European Top 100 course and Quinta da Marinha plus the lovely old parkland of Estoril. It’s a little pocket of very enjoyable golf, at quite reasonable prices.

Overall, Penha Longa makes for a very enjoyable and quality-led holiday, ideal for sitting back and taking it easy or for exploring the fantastic region.
