Greg Norman laid out the links golf course which rivals the long-standing greats of the area such as Tralee, Ballybunion and Waterville. I love links and I also enjoy courses designed by Greg Norman so Doonbeg ticks a lot of boxes for me. With Atlantic views from nearly all of the golf course, Doonbeg was recently tweaked by the much-respected Martin Hawtree and now measures just over 7000 yards with a par of 72 with five par three’s and five par five’s and is the only modern golf course in Ireland’s Top 10.
With mountainous dunes typical of the west coast, most of the greens and fairways were just mown and re-seeded with no earth-moving required. With the views, the natural shaping and the changing winds, Doonbeg is a course that is impossible to date and always worth playing.
